Panasonic Releases First NDI® Camcorder; RedShark Review
March 01, 2019 by Chuck Baker
Panasonic has released the AG-CX350, a new UHD/HD camera which is the first camcorder to include support for encoding 1080p to NewTek’s NDI® bidirectional IP technology for transport of video, audio and data over standard networks. The new camcorder specifically uses the NDI/HX option, which engages additional compression to stay within bandwidth limitations on busier networks or over wireless connections and supports long-distance transmission. Previously, support for NDI/HX has only been offered in PTZ cameras and in converters. The AG-CX350 can shoot and record video resolutions from SD to 4K and output up to 4K via HDMI. The 4K output could also be encoded to NDI for network transmission by using a separate converter, available from manufacturers including NewTek, Magewell, BirdDog and others.
The camera makes use of the network port in two capacities. The AG-CX350 can directly live stream its feed using one of three available protocols. The camera also fits into the new IP video production paradigm, with NDI’s autodiscovery technology making it instantly available to every other NDI-aware product on the same network. And NDI is the leading video production IP technology, with support in thousands of products in the hands of millions of users. Panasonic provides infographics on how these capabilities can be used.
Ned Soltz of RedShark News was able to do an extensive hand’s-on review of the unit, and had this to say:
The biggest feature, though, is its connectivity. The CX350 is the first camcorder to offer NDI connectivity. Panasonic demonstrated using this camera on an NDI network with a couple of PTZ cameras and it just appeared as yet another device.
As noted above, one of the strengths of the NDI/HX technology is that it can be used over a wireless connection, which means the AG-CX350’s wireless dongle option can get you to an untethered camera, able to roam a venue or a playing field at will and still feed live to the production system for the event.
